Freeport, Maine is the small town generally known as the birthplace of the state of Maine. It was founded as a small parcel of land attached to the town of North Yarmouth in the late 18th century. In fact, the town was freed from North Yarmouth on the Fourth of July in 1889, the date that coincides with our nation's independence.
Situated on the Atlantic Coast, Freeport, Maine thrives on the fishing industry with fish and lobsters coming in from the cold Atlantic waters. Besides fishing, the town made it big building ships in the good old days and still continues to do till date. You can visit the historic shipbuilders in Freeport to see how ships were built in the past.

However, the quickest way to visit Freeport is to fly directly into Portland and then make the drive from there. It takes just half an hour to make the trip one-way.
The L.L. Bean is the most popular and loved attraction in Freeport. L.L. Bean is very popular for its lovely and sturdy outdoor outfitters, and a visit to its store and factory would be an exhilarating experience. The store has an indoor trout pond and a rock-climbing wall for you to check it out. What's more, it is open 24 hours a day throughout the year. |
The whole of Maine is suitable for those of you wanting a quality outdoor time with your family. There are many trails, parks in the surrounding areas of the town for biking, hiking and walking. You may find some of these inside the town as well. Try to tame the Bradbury Mountain, as it summit offers a picturesque view of the whole surroundings. If coming here with your family, be sure to include some outdoor activities so that your and your family spends some quality time together and your kids learn what Mother Earth is all about.
If you are into viewing wildlife, look no further than Freeport! The town is known for its great variety of birds such that bird watchers from all over the country make the trip to see their feathery friends. Maine is also home Atlantic seals. Do not miss out on the chance to see these awesome creatures! Consider taking a seal boat tour, where you see these marine mammals in their native environment. Most trips also include visits to the Sequin Island Lighthouse or Eagle Island in addition to a lobstering demonstration.
Wolfe's Neck Farm is a fantastic 600 acre farm where animals are raised naturally without any hormones or antibiotics. Here you can see exactly how organic cattle and sheep grazing works, and understand how eating this untreated meat is better for your body.
